Please read the following information carefully as it contains important details on pet transport to Canada.
1. Statutory Authority
Pursuant to section 60 of the Animal Products Act 1999, I notify the following overseas market access requirements, entitled Dogs and cats to Canada.
This notice takes effect from date of signing.

2. Canada Requirements
Dogs and cats exported from New Zealand to Canada must comply with the import requirements of Canada listed in this notice as follows:
2.1 An official veterinarian of New Zealand must certify the following:
2.1.1 No case of rabies has ever occurred in New Zealand.
2.1.2.1 The animals have been located in New Zealand during the six months immediately preceding the date of shipment or since birth. OR
2.1.2.2 The animals have originated from Canada and are being returned direct from New Zealand.
OR 2.1.2.3 The animals have been located in a country other than New Zealand during the six months immediately preceding the date of shipment and are accompanied by a valid rabies vaccination certificate issued, in either English or French, by a licensed veterinarian from the country of origin. The certificate clearly identifies the animals and shows they are currently vaccinated against rabies.

2.1.3 The animals have been examined within 72 hours of the scheduled time of export and found to be fit and healthy to travel and free from ectoparasites.
2.1.4 If the animal is 8 months of age or younger and not accompanied by the owner, the animals were vaccinated with a registered vaccine not earlier than 6 weeks of age for distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus and parainfluenza virus.
3. Revocations
DOMANIEC.CAN dated 02.10.14 – dogs and cats to the Canada is revoked and replaced by this OMAR notification
4. Definitions
For the purposes of this document:
Any term or expression that is defined in the Animal Products Act 1999 and used, but not defined in this document, has the same meaning as in this Act.
Explanatory note
This certificate is based on the on import conditions from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency of the Government of Canada website on 4 February 2005 (www.inspection.gc.ca/english/anima/heasan/import/dogse.shtml ) and confirmation from Dr. Debbie Barr at CFIA on the 4 February 2005

This OMAR applies only to pet dogs and not commercial shipments.
Fees will be applied for various duties (including inspection) performed by the Animal Health Program of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency for animals being imported into Canada from New Zealand. The fee is payable at the time of inspection.
The certificate mentioned in clause 2.1.2.3 should identify the animal, as in breed, colour, weight, etc, and indicate the name of the licensed rabies vaccine used (trade name), serial number and duration of validity.
Assistance dogs that are certified as a guide, hearing or other service dog are not subject to any restrictions for importation where the person importing the dogs is the user of the dog and accompanies the dog to Canada.
Animals exported to Canada are not required to be microchipped.
